NEW DELHI, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- An Indian parliamentarian panel on Monday asked Twitter to ensure that general elections in India are not influenced by foreign entities, official sources said Monday.

Anurag Thakur, the head of parliamentary panel on Information Technology (IT), met Twitter's global Vice President for Public Policy Colin Crowell in New Delhi, and told him to work closely with the Election Commission of India and address issues flagged by his panel.

General elections are slated to be held in India in April-May, though the exact schedule is yet to be announced by the Election Commission of India.

Thakur told Crowell that the parliamentary elections should be free and fair, and that there should not be the kind of complaints as were reported in the United States elections in 2016.

The Indian parliamentarian panel told Twitter's official that there must be clarity and transparency regarding advertisements and sponsored content on the platform.

The parliamentarian panel on IT has also summoned senior officials of other social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram for the same purpose.
