MEXICO CITY, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's exports increased 5.7 percent in January year-on-year, according to a report published by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) on Wednesday.

The growth was largely due to the strengthening of manufacturing shipments, the majority of which go to the United States, said the report.

Mexican exports totaled 32.453 billion U.S. dollars during the first month of the year, compared to 30.719 billion dollars in January of 2018, according to the report.

Manufacturing shipments rose 8.5 percent while oil exports fell 12.4 percent in January, said Inegi.

Mexican imports grew 6.1 percent in January year-on-year, totaling 37.263 billion dollars, said Inegi.

Non-petroleum imports grew 6.0 percent in January, reaching 33.132 billion dollars, and petroleum imports grew 6.6 percent up to 4.131 billion dollars in the same period.

Mexico, the second largest economy in Latin America after Brazil, depends to a large extent on the economic cycles of the United States, its main trading partner.

The Mexican economy grew 2 percent in 2018, according to a recent report released by Inegi on Monday.
