DHAKA, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two children were killed as fire engulfed a slum in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka early Thursday, the fire service said.

Authorities said the blaze burned some 150 closely packed thatched houses to the ground in the city's "Jahangir slum," which is home to thousands of poor people.

Mahfuz Riben, a duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence, told Xinhua that "firefighters recovered the bodies of two children from ruins during a thorough searching" at about 12:15 a.m. local time Thursday.

It took units of the Fire Service and Civil Defence several hours to extinguish the flames, he said.

An investigation will be launched to find the cause of the fire.
