DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Authorities in Tanzania's Zanzibar archipelago on Thursday warned people on the eastern African Islands to stop harassing tourists.

"Harassment of tourists visiting the beaches is tarnishing the good image of the Zanzibar government across the world," said Seif Idd, the First Vice-President of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar when adjourning the House of Representative session.

The Zanzibar Commission for Tourism (ZCT) said the number of tourists rose to 376,000 in the 2016/2017 fiscal year from 162,242 recorded in the previous year.

ZCT Marketing Director, Miraji Ussi Ukuti, attributed the achievements to the prevailing peace and tranquility on the Islands.

Ukuti outlined strategies that ZCT has devised to boost the tourism sector by attracting more tourists from the Asian continent that boasts of large population. The Zanzibar government targets 500,000 tourists visiting the Islands each year by 2020.
