SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Three family members, including one man and two women, were killed and a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured in a deadly crash on an interstate highway in Oakland, Northern California early Thursday morning, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol (CHP) Spokesman Herman Baza told Oakland-based KTVU news outlet that the victims were family members, whose vehicle slammed into a big-rig trailer that was parking on the shoulder in the curve of Interstate Highway 80 (I-80) in Emeryville, Oakland, northeast of San Francisco.

The boy is now being treated in a hospital for serious conditions, according to Baza. The family was believed to be traveling toward San Francisco.

CHP said the driver of the trailer was not injured and he was sleeping in the cabin of the truck at the time of the accident.

Baza said several factors may have contributed to the crash, but wet roads from recent stormy weather and speed were the most likely reasons why the driver of the ill-fated vehicle lost control.
