41 human trafficking cases exposed in Myanmar in 2 months

YANGON, March 5 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar authorities exposed 41 nationwide human trafficking cases as of February this year, according to the figures from the Anti-Trafficking Police Force on Tuesday.

A total of 140 traffickers were taken action in connection with the cases and 59 people including 8 children were victimized.

During the two-month period, the human trafficking cases mostly occurred in Yangon, Mandalay, Tanintharyi regions, Shan, Kachin, Mon states and Nay Pyi Taw respectively.

There were 317 people, including 25 children, who were victimized in connection with 206 human trafficking in the country in the whole 2018.

Forced marriage was blamed for the main cause of the human trafficking in the country, followed by forced labor, prostitution, illegal adoption and illegal surrogacy.

Myanmar government has set up an anti-human trafficking police force unit in border areas, participating in cooperation with six countries in the Mekong region and member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Under the 2005 Anti-Trafficking in Persons Law, people who smuggle women and children are sentenced to at least 10 years up to lifetime sentence, with money or property received through trafficking confiscated by the government.
