BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) has been given a national society status to enable it to better identify risks and vulnerability at the country level.

The Asia Pacific Regional Office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) released its 2019 plan for Brunei on Tuesday which stated that the BDRCS will shift from a volunteer-based organization to become a national society.

This, they explained, will create a more formal structure to scale BDRCS activities by embarking on a strategic planning process which may enable it to benefit from IFRC tools that lead to clearer risk and vulnerability identification.

"Focus will remain on strengthening the local volunteer based presence of BDRCS through its four branches to build deeper local credibility, sustainability and auxiliary understanding and support for the vital public humanitarian services it offers communities," the plan read.

The IFRC said that the focus of BDRCS's programs at the country level is strengthening the resilience in targeted communities such as youth, and in geographical areas affected by regular flooding and disasters.

The 2019 plan also outlines the IFRC's intentions of strengthening work with Brunei's government to enhance BDRC's auxiliary role in disaster risk reduction and health work.
