Roundup: Afghan conflict claims more than 80 lives within 24 hours

KABUL, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Afghan conflict have claimed more than 80 lives over the past 24 hours, officials said Wednesday.

The armed militants in an operation targeted a construction company in Jalalabad city on Wednesday morning lasted for more than five hours. All five attackers and 16 employees of the company were killed and nine others sustained injuries, the provincial government spokesman Attaullah Khogiani confirmed.

Government forces launched an airstrike on hideouts of the Islamic State (IS) in Khogiani disrict of Nangarhar province on Tuesday night, killing seven armed militants and injuring four others, said an army statement released Wednesday.

A total of 11 Taliban militants were killed and three others arrested as government forces pounded a Taliban hideout in Shirzad district of Nangarhar province on Tuesday night, security officials said Wednesday.

The government forces have also killed 10 Taliban fighters and arrested nine others in Andar and Dehyak districts of eastern Ghazni province over the past 24 hours, provincial government spokesman Aref Nuri reported.

Air attacks against militants killed seven fighters and injured four others in Nad Ali district of the restive Helmand province since Tuesday.

The government forces have also killed 25 militants and injured 16 others in Imam Sahib district of northern Kunduz province over the past 24 hours, the army spokesman in the province Ghulam Hazrat Karimi said.

According to Karimi, government forces have recaptured Qargan Tipa area, the main base of Taliban militants in Imam Sahib district.

The officials however avoided to comment on the casualties of security personnel.

Taliban militants haven't commented.
