COLOMBO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's Meteorology Department on Thursday issued a severe heat advisory for several districts across the country as temperatures could reach above 35 degrees centigrade with severe humidity.
The heat advisory was issued for the northern, north central and eastern provinces and the Puttalam district, in north western Sri Lanka.
The Meteorology Department issued an extreme caution for people residing in Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Mullaitivu and Vavuniya in the north and Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Ampara in the east and Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa in the north central province and Puttalam in the north western province.
The Meteorology Department warned residents living in these areas to avoid going out in the heat within the coming week due to the possibility of heat strokes, cramps and heat exhaustion.
Several areas in capital Colombo and in the south have also been warned to take extra precautions when being out in the heat.
The department advises the public to remain hydrated and take frequent breaks while also avoid going outside. Children and the elderly should also not be left unattended, the Meteorology Department said.
