BERLIN, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Three masked men, who robbed a money transport van at Cologne Bonn airport in western Germany on Wednesday, are still at large, according to Cologne police.

One of the van's security guards was seriously injured with at least one shot in the thigh, police spokesman Wolfgang Baldes said, adding that the guard has been taken to hospital for surgery.

The three men escaped in a black Audi, which was later found empty and in flames near the city of Cologne. Police spokesperson Carsten Rust acknowledged that the three suspects were still at large and a manhunt was underway.

According to a tweet by Cologne Bonn airport, air traffic was not affected by the incident and all terminals were open. Only the part of the long-distance bus station where the attack took place was closed off.

Almost a year ago, two men robbed a money transport at an Ikea parking lot near Cologne, after which the vehicle used to escape was also set aflame. The two perpetrators were never found and German police are looking into a possible connection between the two crimes.

"Our police investigators from the appropriate department are looking into this right now. But so far we have not been able to find a connection," a Duesseldorf police spokesperson told German newspaper Rheinische Post.
