LONDON, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The average house prices in UK rose to 236,800 pounds (about 311,124 U.S. dollars) in February, 5.9 percent higher than January, according to figures published by mortgage lender Halifax on Thursday.

Halifax's house price index showed that house prices in the three months to February were 2.8 percent higher than in the same period a year earlier.

On a quarterly basis, house prices in the latest quarter between December to February grew 1.8 percent over the preceding three months.

Russell Galley, managing director of Halifax, said: "House prices have grown on an annual, quarterly and monthly basis for the first time since October 2018, taking the average house price to 236,800 pounds."

"The shortage of houses for sale will certainly be playing a role in supporting prices. People are still facing challenges in raising a deposit which means we continue to expect subdued price growth for the time being," Galley added.
