WASHINGTON, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Democratic Party announced Monday that it will hold its 2020 national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, determined to take back a crucial state it lost in 2016.

"We're going to Milwaukee for the 2020 Democratic national convention," the Democratic Party said on social media, adding that Fiserv Forum will be the venue for the event.

The national convention, which will yield the Democratic contender for the 2020 presidential election, is scheduled on July 13-16, leaving 16 months for a crowded group of Democratic presidential hopefuls to fight over party nomination.

So far a number of Democratic figures have entered the race for a chance to beat President Donald Trump in 2020, notable figures include U.S. Senators Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Kirsten Gillibrand and Representative Tulsi Gabbard. Former Vice President Joe Biden is expected to announce his bid in the near future.

The Democratic Party said this is the first time that a Midwest city other than Chicago had been selected to host the quadrennial event since 1916, a move viewed by many as a gesture underscoring the the party's emphasis on the state of Wisconsin, which Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton lost in 2016.

The Republican Party has selected the city of Charlotte in North Carolina for its national convention next year.
