LONDON, March 20 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May is expected to address the nation from Downing Street Wednesday night after she formally asked the European Union (EU) for extending Article 50 for three months.

The prime minister will make a statement at 2015 GMT, local media reported.

After May's request to delay Brexit to June 30, the President of the European Council Donald Tusk said that the extension is only possible if British MPs back May's Brexit deal, which has been rejected by the parliament twice since January.

The prime minister has written to Tusk requesting a Brexit delay to June 30, saying that she needs more time to get her withdrawal deal passed by the British parliament.

Britain is due to leave the European Union on March 29.
