NEW DELHI, March 26 (Xinhua) -- Two children were killed Tuesday in a devastating fire in Indian capital Delhi, police said.

The victims were identified as a six-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl.

The fire broke out at around 1:30 p.m. local time inside a four-storey residential building at Shaheen Bagh's Abu Fazal Enclave in southeastern part of Delhi.

"Fire broke out inside four-storey residential building at Shaheen Bagh this afternoon. Two children were trapped on the third floor of the house after the fire engulfed it and both suffered severe burns," a police official said. "Though they were moved to a nearest hospital but they succumbed."

Following the incident the police rushed fire tenders and firefighters to the spot to contain the blaze.

Reports said part of the building was used as a furniture store.

According to officials preliminary investigations revealed the fire was caused due to short-circuit.

Meanwhile, a massive fire broke out in a factory located at an industrial area in Greater Noida in the outskirts of Delhi, but no casualties were reported.

Officials said the firefighting operation was underway when the last reports poured in.

Chances of fire in Indian houses are usually high as people ignore safety standards and store combustible material in a haphazard manner.
