BERLIN, March 29 (Xinhua) -- German citizens consumed an average of 124 scoops, or 8.7 liters, of ice cream in 2018 thanks to record temperatures in the summer, the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) announced on Friday.

The BDSI recorded the strongest growth in the sale of multipacks of various types of ice cream of 244.5 million liters last year, up 12 percent from 216.7 million liters in 2017.

Industrial ice cream manufacturers sold 584.2 million liters of ice cream in Germany in 2018 and sales increased by 13 percent to 2.6 billion euros (2.9 billion U.S. dollars).

The BDSI noted that German ice cream manufacturers were responding in particular to "current nutrition and lifestyle trends" in developing new ice cream creations.

Last year, the German confectionery association noted that the increase in sales in the brand ice cream industry was primarily attributable to the expansion of the range of premium ice cream products with high-quality and versatile ingredients as well as in the organic ice cream, vegan and lactose-free segments.

The German meteorological service (DWD) recorded a new record of 74 summer days with a temperature of 25 degrees centigrade and above in 2018.
