KIEV, March 31 (Xinhua) -- Ukrainian opposition politician and presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko on Sunday cast her ballot in the presidential election, saying that the voting is a "step forward to a successful, flourishing, European Ukraine."

"I believe that today begins a new historical movement of Ukraine towards peace, prosperity, and the happiness of every person," Tymoshenko told reporters at a polling station in Kiev.

Tymoshenko, the leader of the Fatherland party, is one of the three front-runners in the presidential election along with incumbent President Petro Poroshenko and actor Volodymyr Zelensky.

Voting for the presidential election in Ukraine kicked off at 8 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) on Sunday with a record number of 39 candidates competing for the presidency. The polling stations will close at 8:00 p.m. (1700 GMT).
