VIENNA, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Unemployment in Austria has seen a 7.4 percent decline year-over-year in March, stated the Public Employment Service (AMS) in a press release on Monday.

The drop is equivalent to 29,500 fewer unemployed persons and takes the number of jobless people in the country down to 368,979, said AMS.

The construction sector in particular saw a strong 21.9 percent decline in unemployment for the month, which in turn was also reflected in lower jobless numbers amongst persons without a higher education, according to AMS.

A notable decline was also seen amongst the long-term unemployed, defined as people who have been jobless for 12 months or more, down 9.6 percent.

Men fared better in the statistics, with their unemployed numbers down almost ten percent, while unemployment for women saw a slight increase of 0.4 percent.

The decline in unemployment was also only seen amongst Austrian nationals with an 8.1 percent decline, while unemployment for foreigners increased 0.6 percent.
