Magnitude-6.5 quake strikes Aleutian Islands in Alaska

SAN FRANCISCO, April 2 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted the remote Aleutian Islands in the U.S. state of Alaska on Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake took place at 2135 GMT on Tuesday, and the epicenter, at a depth of about 19.1 km, was located at about 31 km northeast of the Kiska Volcano.

The area impacted is sparsely populated and no tsunami warnings were issued following the quake, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
