JAKARTA, April 3 (Xinhua) -- A shallow earthquake of 5.0 magnitude struck Indonesia's East Java province on Tuesday, injuring one person and destroying dozens of houses and buildings, disaster agency officials said on Wednesday.
About 30 houses and seven buildings, including school buildings and a mosque in Sumenep district were affected by the natural disaster, said Abd Rahmah Riadi, head of disaster management agency in the district.
"The jolts were felt here and triggered panic," he told Xinhua over the phone from Sumenep district.
The quake so far has not triggered evacuation as villagers preferred to stay near their houses to guard their belongings, said Riadi.
The quake occurred at 08:22 a.m. Jakarta time (0122 GMT) on Tuesday.
Indonesia is prone to quakes as it lies on a vulnerable quake-impacted zone called the Pacific Ring of Fire.
