SINGAPORE, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Singapore Maritime Week (SMW) 2019 kicked off here Sunday afternoon to discuss leveraging innovation and talent to keep pace with the fast-developing world.
Khaw Boon Wan, Singapore's Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Minister for Transport, officiated at the opening ceremony of the 14th edition of the week at the Marina Square Central Atrium, with a theme of "Driving Connectivity, Innovation and Talent."
The nine-day event features 24 forums and conferences, eight networking receptions and four public outreach activities, and will focus on strengthening Singapore's connectivity and linkages with the global industry, developing a vibrant maritime innovation ecosystem, and building a future-ready and skilled maritime workforce.
The maritime week is expected to receive 40,000 delegates, including industry professionals, business leaders and government officials this year.
Shipping industry is being affected by digital revolution and business transformation, and political pressures brought about by globalization and income inequality add immense challenges, said Khaw, adding that SMW gathers the thought leaders in the maritime industry to share their insights so that we can ride the tide and shape the future.
