KHARTOUM, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's first vice president and defence minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf on Monday said the Sudanese armed forces constitute Sudan's safety valve and protector of its security, unity and leadership.

Ibn Auf made the remarks during a briefing meeting with leaders in the Sudanese army Monday.

The security of the entire Sudan, with its sons and potentialities, is the responsibility of the Sudanese armed forces, said Ibn Auf, noting that history will not forgive the army leaders if they failed to preserve the security of the homeland.

"There are trends trying to exploit the current events to divide the armed force and cause sedition among the components of the country's security system," he noted.

He stressed that the armed forces would not allow the country to slide towards chaos and that they would not tolerate any manifestation of security disorder.

The Sudanese capital on Saturday and Sunday saw huge protests that ended with open sit-in before the Sudanese army general headquarters, with six protesters killed.

Since Dec. 19 last year, Sudan has been witnessing popular protests over the deteriorating economic conditions and price hikes of basic commodities.
