JAKARTA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu commissioned a submarine assembled by the nation's dockyard under a contract with South Korea on Thursday, completing the collaboration that builds three submarines for Indonesia.

The commissioning of the diesel electric submarine U209, Alugoro 405, was launched at a navy base in East Java province's capital of Surabaya.

Speaking in his remarks, Ryamizard said the successful production of the submarine in a national dockyard has made Indonesia the only country in Southeast Asia to do it.

"We now have the capability to build submarine. Not every country can do that," the defense minister said.

Indonesia has prepared a submarine base in Central Sulawesi province's Palu Bay, he added.

The submarine assembled by state-run PT PAL is the last of the three submarines built under Indonesia-South Korea transfer of technology collaboration.

Indonesia received two submarines produced by South Korean dockyard Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Hundreds of Indonesian engineers took part in production process of those submarine in South Korea.

The two submarines, Nagapasa 403 and Ardadedali 404, were received in 2017 and 2018.

The 61.3-meter-long submarine is able to reach a speed of 21 knots while submerged and endure a mission up to more than 50 days, reports said.
