WINDHOEK, April 16 (Xinhua) -- The Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) last weekend held the first ever English-speaking mini basketball convention in southern Africa in the country's capital Windhoek.

The two-day event was attended by delegations from 18 different countries, such as Italy, Egypt, Morocco, Botswana, South Africa, Uganda and Kenya, the NBF said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The convention entailed a short coaches' clinic and afterwards a jamboree with 250 children under the age of 11, where coaches had a chance to implement their acquired skills," the federation said.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Africa president, Hamane Niang, said although Namibia is a small nation, it outdid itself in putting together the event developing the sport at both grassroots and youth levels.

"Run under the initiative, Basketball For Good, the convention is the first of many to still come in at the grassroots level of basketball internationally," he added.

According to International Basketball Foundation (IBF) representative Theren Bullock, the foundation is looking to host one such convention every year on different continents.
