BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, April 22 (Xinhua) -- The Brunei River clean-up campaign has collected a total of 2,683 metric tons of waste since April of last year, Brunei government officials told Xinhua on Monday.
This includes 57,911 plastic bags that were collected under the stilt houses of Kampong Ayer, which is the sultanate's historical water village that comprises wooden stilt houses built on the Brunei River.
A news report by local daily the Borneo Bulletin earlier this year cited a 2009 study by University Brunei Darussalam which found that the amount of rubbish in Kampong Ayer could fill up to 50 million bin liners.
According to Brunei's Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), they introduced the clean-up campaign in April 2018 with the hopes of managing waste found along the river.
