ASTANA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Nur Otan party of Kazakhstan on Tuesday nominated Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as its candidate for the 2019 extraordinary presidential election.

Chairman of the Nur Otan party Nursultan Nazarbayev offered to nominate Tokayev as the party's candidate for the upcoming presidential election slated on June 9.

"Being the chairman of Nur Otan party, I suggest nominating Kassym-Jomart Tokayev as the candidate for the presidential election," Nazarbayev said.

"I have been working with him since the first day of our independence. He is the one who built the foreign policy of Kazakhstan together with me. His diplomatic skills are highly praised abroad. You know that he worked as director general of the United Nations. He is a well experienced politician," Nazarbayev said at the congress of the party.

The participants of the congress unanimously supported the chairman's proposal.

"The current head of the state, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, is the most worthy person for ruling the country," Nazarbayev emphasized.

Nazarbayev announced his resignation as president of Kazakhstan on march 19. According to the country's Constitution, Speaker of the Senate, Tokayev, became president until the next election. On March 20, Tokayev officially took office.

The candidates of other parties will be nominated in the near future. The registration for the presidential candidates will end on May 11.
