Chief of Indonesia's state firm declared suspect in graft case

JAKARTA, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian anti-corruption watchdog or KPK on Tuesday named the chief executive of state electricity utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara or PLN suspect in a corruption case linked with a power project, deputy chief of the KPK Saut Situmorang said here.

President Director of PLN Sofyan Basir was in charge at allegedly accepting the promise of a bribe, or helping other suspects to receive bribes in a construction contract for power plant project in the province of Riau, Situmorang revealed.

"KPK has found initial evidences," on the implication of the suspect on the graft case, he said.

Director general for electricity of the energy and mineral resources ministry Rida Maulana said that she expected the legal process would not hamper power projects in the future, citing that the services to the people must be heeded.

"We hope this case will not disturb future power projects, service to the people must be put on priority," she said.

One minister, who is a politician, and another politician have been undergoing jail terms for their implication on the case.

Indonesia has sought to clean up the country's energy sector from corruption, as the government has striven to narrow deficit in the state electricity firm.
