ALGIERS, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Algerian interim president Abdelkader Bensalah on Tuesday appointed Rachid Hachichi as CEO of energy giant Sonatrach in replacement of dismissed Abdelmoumen Ould Kaddour, said a report by the official APS news agency.

The report did not specify the reasons behind the decision.

Such appointment aims to contain wide-scale protests across Algeria since Feb. 22 to demand the departure of the incumbent government.

Sonatrach is the largest company in Algeria, as it accounts for 96 percent of the country's total exports. In 2018, the company generated revenues of 33 billion U.S. dollars.
