KHARTOUM, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) on Tuesday suspended a contract granting a Filipino company the right to run one of Sudan's biggest ports, said the TMC in a statement.
"The TMC issued a decision suspending the contract of the Filipino company which is operating at Port Sudan's South Port Container Terminal until necessary legal procedures are completed to cancel the contract," the statement said.
Last January, Sudan's Sea Ports Corporation signed a contract with the Filipino International Container Terminal Services, Inc. to run and operate the South Port Container Terminal in Port Sudan.
The contract stipulates that the Filipino company pays 530 million euros (595 million U.S. dollars) to run and operate the southern port for 20 years.
Earlier, port workers' entities voiced rejection to the deal, expressing fear that it would put Sudanese workers at the port out of work.
