LOS ANGELES, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Another tourist died Tuesday after a fall in an accident at the Grand Canyon, the latest in a string of tragic tourist-related deaths that happened at the famous U.S. tourist attraction.
A 70-year-old woman fell to her death at the Grand Canyon's South Rim on Tuesday afternoon. Her body was located and recovered by a rescue team later in the afternoon, according to Grand Canyon National Park officials.
The death is being considered an accident and it was the fifth death inside the park this year, Grand Canyon National Park spokeswoman Vanessa Ceja was quoted as saying by NBC News.
She said that a total of 17 people died inside Grand Canyon National Park last year but the majority of deaths were heat-related.
The woman is the third person to die after falling in the Grand Canyon area in recent weeks. A 67-year-old California man died on April 3 after falling over the canyon rim east of Yavapai Geology Museum.
The Grand Canyon in the western U.S. state of Arizona is famous for its steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the United States, drawing nearly 6.4 million visitors last year.
According to a report of the Arizona Office of Tourism, Arizona had 5.56 million international overnight visitors in 2018, and China is currently the sixth largest source country of tourists.
