PARIS, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Hospices Civils de Lyon, a teaching hospital in central French city of Lyon, on Monday inaugurated a spectral photon-counting scanner, a new generation of scanner that offers more accurate data with color, local media reported.
"It is still a prototype but it will allow to launch experiments on large animals (pigs) before used on humans," Franceinfo radio quoted Philippe Douek of Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, one of the project's leaders, as saying.
Manufactured by Dutch multinational technology company, Philips, the prototype of the revolutionary scanner, based on a new and promising imaging modality that will make color images of the human body, allows detection of the blood clot or the obstructed areas.
The new scanner, which enables more precise visualization, costs about 1.4 million euros (about 1.56 million U.S. dollars).
It is a part of Spectral Photon Counting CT European Project (SPCCT), aiming at detecting early diagnosis in oncology and cardiology.
Launched in 2016, the four-year project involves 11 European countries.
