LONDON, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Some Brexit supporters across Britain have deliberately spoiled their local election ballot papers with messages demanding the British government takes their country out of the European Union (EU), local media reported Friday.

Dozens of photos of spoiled ballots were posted on Twitter with some voters simply choosing to write "Brexit" rather than an indicator of the candidate they would like to vote for, according to the London-based Evening Standard newspaper.

Labour and the Conservatives have been punished over Brexit by voters as both parties suffered a hammering in the local elections, early results showed. Ballot counting is still going on throughout the country.

The Conservatives have so far lost more than 700 seats and 30 councils in the local council elections, with Labour also lost more than 70 council seats across England in an indication that Brexit uncertainty is taking its toll on both major parties.

One image posted on social media showed a frustrated voter at Kirkburton Parish Council write: "None of these deliver Brexit."

Another spoiled ballot in East Staffordshire hit out at British Prime Minister Theresa May as a Brexit supporter wrote: "Theresa May betrayed Brexit", adding they would "never again" vote Conservative.

Most of the seats were last contested in May 2015 when the Conservatives won more than half of them, making this a key test for May as she grapples with a fracturing party.

The Conservatives had been expecting a tough night amid frustration at May's failure to take Britain out of the EU as planned. But Labour also struggled, losing seats amid confusion among voters over the party's stance on Brexit.
