KABUL, May 6 (Xinhua) -- At least five Taliban militants were killed in two separate premature blasts on Sunday, the Afghan government said Monday.

In one incident, four militants were killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) they were planting in Gulran district of western Herat province detonated, the Presidential Information Coordination Center (Tawhid Center) said in a statement.

In southern Zabul province, Taliban militants "wanted to plot a land mine in Shajoy district of Zabul province, which detonated on themselves and resulted in the killing of a mine plotter and wounding three others."

Taliban militants have been using IEDs to make roadside bombs and landmines for targeting security forces, but the lethal home-made weapons also inflict casualties on civilians.

On Sunday, three children were killed and two others wounded in an IED explosion in Gulran.

The militant group has not made comments on the report yet.
