TOKYO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Wednesday as stocks tracked declines on Wall Street overnight and market concerns over the outlook for the global economy intensified.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 321.13 points, or 1.46 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 21,602.59, marking its lowest close since April 2.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 27.51 points, or 1.72 percent, to finish at 1,572.33.
All industry categories retreated into negative territory by the close of play, with precision instrument, air transportation, and glass and ceramic product-linked issues comprising notable decliners.
