NAIROBI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Kenya Airways said Thursday it has added daily direct service from Nairobi to Bujumbura, Burundi as part of its effort to grow its footprint across Africa.
Sebastian Mikosz, Kenya Airways CEO, said the new daily service will operate in the afternoons in addition to the current daily morning flights.
"This increase to our local and regional network is part of our strategic intent to expand our footprint across Africa," Mikosz said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
He said the new flight to be operated by Kenya Airways' subsidiary Jambojet is set to reduce waiting time and offer better connections to Kenya Airways' growing European and American service.
Mikosz said the new direct flights to Bujumbura will increase travel and trade among East African Community (EAC) countries as the common market protocol is already in place.
The EAC protocol has paved way for free movement of labor, goods and services across the members of the EAC bloc, which include Kenya, Uganda, and Burundi.
Kenya Airways already serves at least 40 destinations in Africa.
