TBILISI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Georgia on Thursday commemorated the 74th anniversary of the end of World War II (WWII) in Europe.

Representatives of the Georgian government, veterans and citizens gathered and laid flowers before the monument of the "Unknown Soldier" in Vake Park in central Tbilisi to commemorate those who had been killed in the war.

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, after laying a wreath before the monument in the park, said in his speech that May 9 is a special day in the history of mankind.

"I want to congratulate everyone on this day, especially our veterans. Hundreds of thousands of Georgian heroes have fallen in the battlefield and I want to pay tribute to their memory," he said.

Ceremonies were also held in several other Georgian cities to commemorate the end of WWII.

Victory Day, or the day Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, is observed in Georgia each year together with most European countries as a national holiday.
