ANKARA, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday slammed the U.S. remarks on the Istanbul mayoral elections, urging Washington to respect the revote decision by the Turkish top election body.

"Everyone must respect the decision taken by the Supreme Election Council (YSK)," the ministry said in a statement.

The similar incidents occurred in the United States as well as other countries, and all were resolved within the principles of democracy, the ministry statement added.

The statement came a day after the U.S. Department of State pressed Turkey to abide by the international norms for elections.

The Turkish election body on Monday cancelled the March 31 Istanbul election in which the ruling Justice and Development Party of President Recep Erdogan narrowly lost the mayorship.

A do-over election will be held in Istanbul on June 23.
