TRIPOLI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- Islamic State (IS) militants on Thursday launched an attack on the southern Libyan town of Ghadwa, 60 km south of Sabha City, killing two and injuring several others.

"A terrorist attack targeted Ghadwa town at dawn, killing two residents, injuring several others and kidnapping a number of young people," a security source in Sabha told Xinhua.

"The attackers burned several houses and government buildings," the source said.

The IS claimed responsibility for the attack.

"Islamic State fighters attacked houses of the militias of Haftar (army commander) inside Ghadwa town," the IS tweeted.

A few days ago, the IS claimed responsibility for an attack on an army training center in Sabha, killing nine soldiers.

Sabha, largest city in southern Libya, has been under the control of the east-based army led by Khalifa Haftar.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political division ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.
