WELLINGTON, May 12 (Xinhua) -- United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday paid tribute to the "courage and resilience" of New Zealand after the March 15 terrorist attacks in Christchurch and praised the country's leadership role in fighting climate change.

Guterres, on a three-day visit to New Zealand, met with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will attend a Paris summit next week calling for eliminating terrorist and violent extremist content on social media.

He expressed his support for Ardern's call to crack down on misusing social media to promote terrorism and extremism.

Guterres said at a press conference that New Zealand and Ardern's leadership are crucial in tackling climate change, as the government on Wednesday submitted to the parliament the Zero Carbon Bill outlining the country's plan over the next 30 years on global warming and aims to reduce greenhouse gases to net zero by 2050.
