Final phase of polling begins in India

VARANASI, India, May 19 (Xinhua) -- The seventh and final phase of polling of the ongoing 17th general elections began in 59 parliamentary constituencies on Sunday, across seven states and one union territory.

The parliamentary constituencies going to polls include all the 13 constituencies in northern state Punjab, 13 in northern Uttar Pradesh, nine in eastern state West Bengal, eight each in central state Madhya Pradesh and eastern state Bihar, four in northern hilly state Himachal Pradesh, three in Jharkhand, besides one in union territory of Chandigarh in north India.

Results are slated to be announced on May 23.

According to the Election Commission of India, more than 100 million eligible voters would decide the fate of 918 candidates in the polls. Over 112,000 polling stations have been put in place to ensure smooth elections.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contesting for a second consecutive term of five years. He is one of the contestants from the Varanasi parliamentary constituency located in northern state Uttar Pradesh.
