Japan's economy grows annualized 2.1 pct in Q1

TOKYO, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Japan's economy grew at an annualized 2.1 percent in the January-March quarter, marking the second straight quarter of expansion, government data showed Monday.

According to the Cabinet Office, the reading follows a revised expansion of 1.6 percent in the October-December quarter, on an inflation-adjusted basis.

Japan's economy expanded a real 0.5 percent on quarter, the government's data showed.

Private consumption shed 0.1 percent from the previous quarter, while capital expenditure edged 0.3 percent lower, the Cabinet Office said.

Exports, meanwhile, fell 2.4 percent in the recording period, the data showed.

Japan's economy grew an annualized 3.3 percent and 0.8 percent on quarter, in nominal terms, or unadjusted for price changes.

For fiscal year 2018, the economy here expanded 0.6 percent in real terms. This compares with a 1.9 percent expansion logged for fiscal 2017, the government's data showed.
