Afghan courts sentence 27 drug-related suspects

KABUL, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Afghan courts imprisoned 27 suspects over smuggling drugs after investigating into 21 drugs-related cases, a statement said on Wednesday.

"During Central Narcotics Tribunal's primary and appellate court's open sessions over the last seven days, up to 27 suspects involved in 21 drug-related cases have been sentenced from one year to 17 years in jail," Counter-Narcotics Criminal Justice Task Force of Afghanistan (CJTF) said in the statement.

The Central Narcotics Tribunal (CNT) is a special Afghan court for jurisdiction of major drug cases.

The suspected were involved in carrying 33 kg heroin, 33 kg of morphine, 2,220 kg hashish and 16 kg methamphetamine and 600 kg of solid chemical substance, the statement noted.

Counter-Narcotics Police of Afghanistan (CNPA) together with the detective Afghan security agencies have arrested 30 suspects within the same period from across the country.
