KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's National Directorate for Security or the country's intelligence agency said in a statement Saturday that it had arrested three members of the Islamic State (IS) group and 27 militants affiliated with the Taliban in the country's southern region.

According to the statement, the suspected militants have been arrested over the past one month during series of operations across the restive province.

"The arrested insurgents have been involved in subversive activities, including attacks on security forces, targeting religious scholars and terrorizing people in Ghazni, Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul and Uruzgan provinces," said the statement, adding that the arrested men have confessed to their involvement in terror activities.

Neither the IS nor the Taliban has made a comment on the report yet.
