YANGON, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Five people have been killed as a tug boat sank in Myanmar's Chindwin River, according to local police on Monday.

The tug boat carrying 11 people and pulling a log barge collided with a cargo vessel sailing in the Chindwin River in the same direction in the early hours on Sunday.

Following the collision between pier No. P3 and P4 of the Chindwin bridge, the tug boat sank in the river, leaving five people dead including the helmsmen.

Six other rear-seated passengers escaped by jumping off the boat and were rescued by a search-and-rescue team, while front-seated passengers died in the incident.

Meanwhile, eight fishermen were killed in a boat capsizal in waters off Yangon's Thongwa township Sunday as they were caught in the whirlwind that wrecked their boats while they were catching fish in the sea.
