ABUJA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen people including members of a local vigilante group were killed in a fresh attack by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria's restive northeastern state of Borno, according to a militia group on Monday.

Bello Danbatta, the spokesman for the Civilian Joint Task Force assisting the military in the fight against terrorists, told Xinhua that five members of a local security group were shot dead alongside 11 villagers when the Boko Haram militants stormed two villages on the outskirts of Maiduguri, the capital city of Borno, on Sunday.

The militants, wearing black robes, rode on five motorcycles to the villages of Goni Abbachari and Dala-Yazara, Danbatta said.

An unknown number of people were wounded during the attack. Most of the villagers fled to nearby bushes to seek refuge as the attackers shot indiscriminately, he said.

The vigilante men killed during the attack had tried to repel the attack, he added.
