ADDIS ABABA, May 27 (Xinhua) -- The National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced on Monday it is requesting 129 million U.S. dollars to conduct the national elections in 2020.

Speaking to journalists, Birtukan Mideksa, Chairperson of NEBE, said the board has requested the Ethiopian parliament to approve the amount it needs to conduct national elections in 2020.

Mideksa said NEBE has been undertaking various efforts to make the 2020 national elections free and fair, including amending NEBE's legal provisions, institutional reforms and organizing political parties' forums.

Ethiopia is scheduled to hold parliamentary and regional assemblies' elections in May 2020, with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed promising to make the elections free, fair and transparent.

The last parliamentary and regional assemblies' elections were held in May 2015.
