TOKYO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump, who is on a visit to Japan, on Tuesday expressed his sympathies to the victims of a mass stabbing attack on school children near Tokyo early in the day.

"On behalf of the first lady and myself, I want to take a moment to send our prayers and sympathy to the victims of the stabbing attack this morning," Trump said during a visit to a Maritime Self-Defense Force base.

"All Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and for their families," Trump said from the base in Yokosuka, close to Tokyo.

An elementary school girl and a man in his 30s were pronounced dead after a stabbing rampage against a group of school children who were waiting for their bus early Tuesday morning in a residential area near Noborito Station in Kawasaki City, which lies to the west of Tokyo.

The assailant, a man believed to be in his 50s, also died after stabbing himself in the neck.

Fifteen other school children were injured in the rampage. Local police said among those injured, two girls and a woman in her 40s are being treated for serious injuries.

Trump's words of condolence came on the last day of his four-day state visit to Japan.
