BEIRUT, May 29 (Xinhua) -- French Ambassador to Lebanon Bruno Foucher said on Wednesday that France has allocated millions of U.S. dollars to fund the establishment of schools by the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in Lebanon.

"These schools will teach in Arabic, English and French, which will open in 2021," Foucher was quoted as saying by Elnashra, an online independent newspaper.

Foucher's remarks came during an event at a UN school in the southern city of Sidon.

France will support the UNRWA amid its financial crisis after the U.S. decision to stop funding the UN agency, the French ambassador said at the event.

The United States announced last year that it will no longer contribute to the UNRWA, calling the agency an "irredeemably flawed operation" while criticizing other countries for not sharing the burden of supporting Palestinians.

This has pushed other countries, such as France, Switzerland and Britain, to increase their donations to UNRWA.

UNRWA provides services to about 5 million registered Palestinian refugees in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which cover education, health care, relief, social services, infrastructure and camp improvement.
