KHARTOUM, May 29 (Xinhua) -- A woman was killed on Wednesday and others injured during clashes in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, according to a statement by office of Sudanese army spokesman.

"In the wake of a quarrel between members of the armed forces and citizens at the Nile avenue (in central Khartoum), an army personnel, belonging to the defence and services brigade, who was drunk, fired shots from his personal weapon," the statement said.

"Citizen Mayadah John was injured in the head, which resulted in her death immediately. Another citizen was injured on the leg and a soldier was also injured," it added.

The statement stressed that the situation has been contained and the offender arrested, noting that the injured persons have been transferred to the hospital to receive treatment and the body of the killed woman has been sent to the morgue.

It stressed that the incident was "individual and isolated," pointing out that legal measures have been adopted and necessary procedures taken to keep security and protect the citizens.
