LUSAKA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Anti-drug agencies in Zambia on Wednesday destroyed over five tons of cannabis seized from over 160 people in some districts of Luapula Province.

The Drug Enforcement Commission said the destroyed drugs included both fresh and dry cannabis plants and seeds and was in line with the country's anti-drug law.

The destruction of the cannabis follows the disposal of cases of people arrested for illegal possession or cultivation of cannabis in the districts between April 2018 and March 2019.

Charles Ndulumina, Provincial Regional Commander of the anti-drug agency said that the agency will not relent in closely following up on issues to do with drug trafficking and abuse.

He said in a release that drug abuse has been prevalent among young people who were both growing and abusing drugs such as cannabis and ending up destroying their lives.

He urged residents of the province to desist from engaging themselves in the cultivation of cannabis and instead concentrate on growing crops which will benefit the nation.
