STOCKHOLM, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The Social Democratic Party is set to remain the Danish parliament's largest, according to preliminary results reported by Danish news DR on Wednesday night.

According to DR's prognosis, published at 9:36 p.m. local time (2036 GMT), the Social Democratic Party received 26.6 percent of the vote. At least 27.9 percent of the votes have now been counted, DR reported.

If final results align with DR's prognosis, the Social Democratic Party will be able to form a coalition government with the red block. Mette Frederiksen, leader of the Social Democratic Party, looks set to be Denmark's next prime minister.

The red block jointly received 52.3 percent of the vote, according to DR's prognosis, and includes the Social Democratic Party, the Socialist People's Party, the Red-Green Alliance (Enhedslisten), Danish Social Liberty Party (Radikale Venstre) and The Alternative.

The Liberal Party (Venstre), led by incumbent prime minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, received 22.6 percent of the vote, according to the prognosis.

The blue block, comprised of the Liberal Party together with the Danish People's party, Liberal Alliance and the Conservative People's Party received 40.3 percent of the vote, according to the prognosis.

The Danish People's Party received only 9 percent of Wednesday's vote, according to the prognosis - less than half as many votes compared to the 2015 general election, when they were almost as popular as the Social Democrat party.

The new right-wing extremist party, Hard Line (Stram Kurs), founded in 2017 by Danish lawyer Rasmus Paludan, became eligible to participate in the election shortly before it was called on May 7. According to DR's prognosis, Hard Line received 2 percent of votes.

Voting booths opened Wednesday morning and DR reports a record high number of Danes have voted. Of the 4,239,230 eligible voters in Denmark, 85.7 percent voted, according to the 9:36 p.m. prognosis published by DR.

Formal results for the election are expected to be announced Thursday.
